A man has been charged with wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm after a man in his 70s was stabbed in York city centre.

The incident happened at about 05:15 BST on Thursday outside the Moxy hotel in the Peasholme Green area, North Yorkshire Police said.

The victim was taken to hospital where he was "recovering well," a force spokesperson said.

Matthew McPherson, 25, appeared at York Magistrates' Court on Saturday, where he was remanded in custody ahead of an appearance at York Crown Court on 10 November.

Mr McPherson has been charged with two counts of wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm as well as two counts of possessing a bladed article in a public place. He did not enter a plea during Saturday's hearing.

Det Supt Graeme Wright said: "This was an isolated incident and there is no wider threat to the community."
