A Victorian river crossing which was closed due to its deteriorating condition is to be torn down and replaced.

The bridge at New Mills Yard in Norwich, Norfolk, connects Westwick Street to the Riverside Walk and has been shut since April due to concerns about its stability.

The structure, which was originally constructed in 1898, is set to be removed and rebuilt as part of a £500,000 project to reopen the route next year.

While the appearance of the new bridge will be similar to the existing one, Norfolk County Council officials say it will "improve upon the current appearance" of the area.

A Grade II listed building, New Mills Yard is a former watermill complex which was closed in 1972.

While there was a proposal to restore the watermill five years ago, there are no current plans to see it revived under the £500,000 project.

Since 2005, the bridge has only been accessible for pedestrians and cyclists and will remain closed to vehicles when it reopens.

Norwich City Council have granted permission for the construction work, which is expected to take place in 2025.
