A man has been arrested after a late-night shooting and stabbing which left four people injured.

Police confirmed they were called to reports of fighting and a gun being fired at a car on Reedswood Lane in the Birchills area of Walsall shortly before midnight.

A man was treated at the scene for bullet wounds and three others sustained stab wounds, police said.

Forensic examination is being carried out on a gun and machete recovered from Reedswood Lane.

West Midlands Ambulance Service said it treated a man who had been shot shortly before 23:50 BST near the junction of Old Birchills and Reedswood Lane.

It added another patient was treated for serious injuries and both then transferred to a major trauma centre.

"Two further patients were treated for injuries not believed to be serious before being handed over to hospital," the service added.

A 26-year-old man remains in custody

Police confirmed a 26-year-old man was in custody for questioning and it was carrying out CCTV investigations to identify others involved.

Section 60 stop and search powers, external have been put in place as inquiries continue.

Walsall Manor Hospital said four men were initially brought there for treatment.

"[The hospital] cannot be accessed by car via Pleck Road currently whilst the trust supports the police investigation that is under way," a spokesperson said.

"All of our services remain open and we will be doing all we can to continue to support patients to attend for their appointments or treatment."

The hospital confirmed an area had been cordoned off for a police forensics team working on site.
