Cremations have been cancelled at a West Yorkshire crematorium due to emergency repairs needing to be carried out at the site.

While funeral services could continue to be held in the chapel at Dewsbury Crematorium, bodies would currently have to be transferred to Huddersfield for cremation, according to Kirklees Council.

The repairs to two cremators were expected to be completed by 13 February and people affected by the issue had been contacted, a spokesperson said.

Council leader Carole Pattinson said: "We expect normal service to resume from Thursday."

"We are working hard to ensure repairs are completed as quickly," she added.

"Families of the services affected have been contacted and we are sorry for any inconvenience caused at this difficult time for them."

According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, the crematorium last closed in 2019 for a £3m refurbishment, which included replacing the cremators.
