Anglian Water says it will investigate the emergence of new sinkholes on the Wisbech road

A water company is investigating the cause of a series of sinkholes which have appeared on the same stretch of road outside a primary school.

Cambridgeshire Police shut the West Street junction with Elm Road in Wisbech on Thursday after two sinkholes emerged.

It comes 11 months after barriers were put in place on the same road because a hole had opened up.

A spokesperson from Anglian Water said: "We’re aware of these sinkholes, and we’ll be sending a technician out to carry out CCTV surveys in the coming days to understand the cause."

The water company confirmed there had been "previous issues on Elm Road" but these were not related to its assets.

It said: "This is an area where we see a lot of sinkholes and we're working with Highways to identify what is causing this issue and get it fixed as quickly as possible."

Cambridgeshire County Council confirmed Anglian Water would be investigating the cause.

It is still unknown when the road is due to reopen.
