People planning to take a New Year's Day dip have been advised to make an "informed decision" amid a weather warning for south-west England.

Chris Cousens, from the RNLI, also said people visiting the coast should keep a safe distance from the sea due to predicted strong winds.

The Met Office said a period of strong winds during Wednesday may lead to "some disruption".

Mr Cousens said the high winds could lead to "more dangerous conditions at the coastline than normal".

'Better to call'

He said: "Our advice at the RNLI is, if you are planning to visit the coast, that you make sure you stay a safe distance from the waters. Conditions could knock you off your feet and wash you into the sea.

"If you are visiting to see the waves, it is not worth getting too close because that might happen."

He also advised people who found themselves unexpectedly in the water and in difficulty to remember the charity's "float to live, external" advice.

He said: "If you see someone else in that situation to remember to call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard.

"It is better to call and initiate an emergency response than to go in and try and rescue somebody yourself."

Mr Cousens also advised people attending planned new year events to consider the conditions on the day and make and "informed and sensible decision".

He said: "We always advise people join in with an organised event, particularly when there are stormy conditions.

"That way there should be safety cover in place should the event go ahead, also people there are trained and able to make an informed decision.

"As tempting as it is to go in on the first day of the year, the conditions may not allow that.

"If you are not able to make a good decision about the condition, seek some advice from people that know that beach and location."
