A new zebra crossing has been installed on Upland Road behind Elizabeth College to improve pupil safety.

The States of Guernsey said the road saw about 1,000 crossings on a school day and was a popular road for other commuters.

It said the crossing had tactile pavements and dropped kerbs to make it more accessible, and that street lighting would be installed.

The footpath had also been widened between Grange Road and Upland Road to improve pedestrian access, officials said.

Road safety officer Paul James said improving road safety was one of the government's "top priorities".

He said: "With so many people crossing at this location, it’s a really sensible place for a new crossing to be installed."

James Couchman, bursar at Elizabeth College, said the crossing would "improve the safety of students and staff moving between lessons during the school day, and will also help to encourage motorists to watch their speed when driving along Upland Road".
