The majority of homes that were left without gas after a burst water main flooded the network have been reconnected.

Gas supplier company SGN said about 350 homes across 15 streets in the HP21 postcode area of Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire, were affected after the water flooded the network on Wednesday.

It has since extracted 55,000 litres of water from the network and reconnected 325 properties.

In a statement it added: "All of our effort today is focused on continuing to remove pockets of water from our pipes and restoring remaining supplies as quickly as possible."

Over the weekend the gas provider promised residents they were entitled to compensation worth £75 for each 24-hour period they were without gas.

On Sunday night the firm brought in additional resources to speed up the process.
