A heritage railway said it could cease to exist if more young people are not inspired to join the industry.

The Nene Valley Railway (NVR) at Wansford near Peterborough hosted the "Invest Your Future" STEM event, where dozens of companies from engineering and rail were on hand to offer young people job opportunities and experience.

Russ Jenner, NVR volunteer liaison officer, said: "We have got to keep it going. That's one of the problems - getting youngsters involved for engineers or a guard or driving jobs."

Two long-serving members of the critical care team at an NHS trust have been honoured for an incredible four decades of dedication to patient care.

Sisters Marie Caston and Ros Rippon, who both began their careers in 1985 at Peterborough City Hospital, are being celebrated by the North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust for their combined 80 years of service.

Lisa Bryan will continue providing 'lollipop' services for at least another school year after a campaign to save her role

A lollipop lady will stay in post helping children cross the road outside Eye Church of England Primary for at least another year after a campaign to stop Peterborough City Council cutting school crossing services.

Lisa Bryan has been in post for 26 years and will remain in post until a permanent crossing is installed.

Meanwhile, the council confirmed that work on an £8.3m bridge for walkers and cyclists over the River Nene will begin next year. Cygnet Bridge will link Fletton Quays to the Embankment as officials look to ease pressure on traffic routes in the city centre.

The council's Labour administration lost another councillor this week, after the resignation from the party of Nicola Jenkins who was elected to represent Bretton ward in 2024. She will sit as an independent.

Jenkins said she "felt I couldn't speak up without going against the party line". Council leader Dennis Jones said her decision was "deeply disappointing", but that Labour will "continue to work hard to deliver for local residents as we always have".

Peterborough United got their first point of the season with a 1-1 draw against Bradford City at London Road.

Darren Ferguson's side remain bottom of League 1.

Peterborough Sports have also made a slow start to their season. They lost to Scarborough Athletic and Worksop Town over the Bank Holiday weekend.

The Turbines have just one point from their opening five games.
