A charity is hoping to raise awareness for those who use a long cane in Guernsey.

The Guernsey Blind Association (GBA) said it would be marking Long Cane Awareness day with a walk starting at Market Square in St Peter Port on Saturday.

A long cane is a mobility tool used by people who are blind or visually impaired to help them "navigate their surroundings on their own terms", the charity said.

Simon De La Mare, who relies on a guide dog and cane, asked islanders to see things from a different perspective.

'Be mindful'

He said: "The main thing would be just more awareness that if somebody like me does have a long cane it does mean that we are severely visually impaired and just to be mindful of that."

GBA Vision Support Services Officer Chantelle Tucker said visually impaired islanders often struggled to get around the island - specifically in town.

She said: "Anywhere that you've got a more built-up environment, such as here in St Peter Port, there can be a lot more difficulties.

"Try close your eyes and walking through the bus terminus, walking down the high street - there's push bikes, there's roadworks, there's billboards, there's anything and everything."

Ms Tucker said raising awareness for people who use long canes was "crucial".

She said: "When the community understands its purpose, it can help create a safer and more inclusive environment.

"Simple actions, such as giving way on pavements, keeping pathways clear, and being mindful in busy areas, can make a significant difference.

"Awareness is the first step toward inclusion, and together, we can make Guernsey a safer, more understanding place for everyone."
