A man has been arrested after a pedestrian died when he was hit by a car in the West Midlands.

The man in his 40s was on foot on Birmingham Road, West Bromwich, when he was struck on Saturday just before 21:00 BST and died at the scene, police said.

The driver initially stopped at the scene, not far from West Bromwich Albion's ground, The Hawthorns, but then drove off, they added.

A 64-year-old man was arrested on Sunday in Birmingham on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and of drink-driving and remained in custody.

A Mitsubishi car was recovered as part of the investigation, officers said.
