Virtual reality film to show rough sleepers' plight
- Published
A Virtual Reality experience is being used to raise awareness of homelessness by allowing people to see through the eyes of rough sleepers.
Streets of Change created a documentary and a virtual experience which followed real people in Northampton on their journey from the streets to recovery.
West Northamptonshire Council reported the number of homeless people in the area was rising, with five new referrals received every day.
Film director Judi Alston said she hoped the project addressed "preconceptions" about homeless people as well as the importance of tackling the "growing societal problem".
Film makers One to One Development Trust, external worked closely with West Northamptonshire Council’s outreach team to document their work supporting people who were homeless, sleeping rough - or struggling with addiction.
'Address stereotypes'
The trust also produced an immersive Virtual Reality and documentary experience which provided an insight into loneliness and homelessness on the streets at night.
Scenes use poetry and artwork created by homeless people with the experience set to be used in education.
Ms Alston said: “There are a lot of preconceptions about people who are homeless.
"This project aims to address some of those stereotypes and bring more awareness to the stories of those affected by showing the importance of agencies working together to support this growing societal problem.”
The documentary film and Virtual Reality experience will be launched later this month.
