Work to improve safety along a stretch of the A49 will mean a series of overnight closures close to the Herefordshire-Shropshire border.

National Highways said it would replace road signs to make drivers more aware of bends and junctions, replace road markings and bollards and also resurface the road at Dinmore Hill.

The work, external will be carried out in phases, starting north of Ross-on-Wye on 18 November and ending close to Hope under Dinmore on 19 March.

It will be carried out at night to reduce disruption and be paused over Christmas.

Carrying out the work in phases would reduce its effect on people in the area, project manager Thomas Williams said

"We will also make every effort to manage noise levels and limit lighting," he added.

Diversions will be set up and signposted during the closures, which will take place between Monday and Friday, from 20:00 to 06:00 GMT.

The dates for the overnight closures are:

  • 18 November to 9 December - A49 closed between A49/A4137 and A49/Grafton Lane.

  • 10 December to 17 January - A49 closed between A49/A456 Woofferton and A49/A4112 Stockton.

  • 20 January to 27 January - A49 closed between A49/A4112 Stockton and A49/Leominster Bypass roundabout.

  • 28 January to 31 January - A49 closed between A49/A44 Worcester Road roundabout and A49/A417 Hope under Dinmore.
