The Deep's penguin chick has been named after Hull-born campaigner Lillian Bilocca

A penguin chick has been named after headscarf revolutionary Lillian Bilocca.

Ms Bilocca, from Hull, spearheaded the Headscarf Revolutionaries, who campaigned for improved safety in the fishing industry in the wake of the Triple Trawler Tragedy in 1968.

The gentoo penguin chick hatched on 9 June weighing just 104g (3oz) and took her first swim on 16 August.

Lillian, who is a special sub species of gentoo known as Pygoscelis papua ellsworthi, can be identified by her blue and white wing bands.

The Deep is part of the European Association of Zoos Association breeding programme for gentoo penguins.

The penguins use pebbles to build their own nesting sites and impress mating partners.

Once an egg is laid, the parents will incubate it on their nest for about 30 days until signs of hatching appear.

Staff at The Deep had previously described the chick as their "sweet new arrival", who was beginning to develop an "adorable lively personality".
