Penguin chick takes its first swim at aquarium

A gentoo penguin chick that hatched at The Deep in Hull has taken its first swim.

The chick hatched on 9 June and took its first splash at the aquarium on 16 August, weighing in at a "healthy" 10.3lb (4.66kg), keepers said.

A name has not yet been given to the chick whose gender will not be found out until a feather is taken for DNA testing after its first moult.

The Deep said the chick was now eating fish hand-fed by keepers and "continues to be developing really well".

This chick is a special sub species of gentoo penguin known as Pygoscelis papua ellsworthi.

The Deep is part of the European Association of Zoos Association's breeding programme for gentoo penguins.
