A Surrey council is hosting a countryside walk and talk as part of a campaign to prevent people taking their own lives.

It is hoped the event, organised by Epsom and Ewell Borough Council, will raise awareness of the help available to anyone struggling with mental health issues.

It will take place on Epsom Downs on 10 September, which is World Suicide Prevention Day.

The walk will be led by the organisation We Power On, a men's mental health group based in Epsom.

A second event will feature a talk by We Power On's founder.

Artwork will be created during the walk, which will be taken on a tour of the borough, before going on display at the Epsom Picturehouse on 10 October, which is Mental Health Awareness Day.

The event is also being supported by End Stigma Surrey, another group that supports people with mental health issues, and the Jockey Club.

Clive Woodbridge, chair of the council's community and wellbeing committee, said: “Mental health issues can have a devastating effect on sufferers and those close to them.

"No one should have to face mental health challenges alone and it’s important as a council that we do all that we can to ensure vulnerable residents are informed, and can access, vital support when they need it.

"I’d encourage anyone experiencing mental health issues to seek help. One life lost is too much.”

There are 50 places available on the walk and talk event and another 50 for the talk.
