Three students have secured funds to continue pursuing their motorsport dreams.

University of Wolverhampton trio Kayley Philpott, Alyce Mayo and Claire Berry are all studying motorsport engineering.

They have received scholarship prizes of between £500 and £1,000 in recognition of their top exams results and commitment to their studies.

The scholarships have been donated by local solicitors FBC Manby Bowdler, which also sponsors the University of Wolverhampton Racing (UWR) team.

The awards are part of the Women in Engineering initiative, which has been running for more than five years.

University bosses said they were committed to promoting women in science.

“It feels amazing knowing I have the backing of the university going into my final year of studies," said Ms Mayo.

She added she would be able to use the money to gain further experience and join other race teams.

Shane Kelly, racing driver and team manager at UWR, added it was difficult to select the students for the prizes.

"We’ve seen so many incredible women come through our race teams," he said.

The university offers degrees in subjects including motorsport, automotive, mechatronics, aerospace and manufacturing,
