An 82-year-old pedestrian has died after being struck by a car driven by an 81-year-old man, police have said.

The victim was killed when he was hit by a red and black Renault Austral on Kiln Lane in Eccleston, St Helens, at about 21:20 BST on Tuesday.

Merseyside Police said the driver was under investigation on suspicion of causing death by careless driving.

The force appealed for witnesses and anyone with video footage to come forward. Det Sgt Simon Duffy said: "We are aware of pedestrians nearby and would appeal to one male in particular - who walked past the vehicle involved and the victim - to contact us as soon as possible."
