Councillors have asked Hull City Council to check trees in the Avenues area after a tree fell down and damaged cars.

Hull City Council cleared the fallen tree from Westbourne Avenue in windy weather on Thursday evening.

A post on Facebook from the Avenues, Chants and Dukeries FOCUS group, which includes ward councillor Rhiannon Beeson, urged the Council to "complete a thorough inspection of all trees" in the area.

A Hull City Council spokesperson said the accident had been caused by internal decay, which "cannot be easily detected".

The authority said it would continue to monitor tree health on the Avenues and elsewhere in the city.

The Avenues area, which runs from Marlborough Avenue to Victoria Avenue off Princes Avenue, is a conservation area well known for its tree-lined streets.

On Facebook, the FOCUS group wrote: "No one wants to see trees cut down, but we also want to ensure the safety of residents."

Residents were largely in agreement over the safety calls.

One local resident said: "The trees are what makes the Avenues special, but at the same time they do need to be monitored and perhaps pruned before more drastic pollarding is needed."
