Guernsey driving instructors who put forward students for practical tests must have successfully completed an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check from next week.

The safeguarding measure will be in place from 18 November, the States of Guernsey said.

DBS checks are a way for employers to inspect a person's criminal record.

The States said the majority of instructors had already completed the check and a reminder had been sent to those who had not.

It said the move forms part of the Government Work Plan to comply with the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic.

Deputy Lindsay de Sausmarez, President of the Committee for the Environment and Infrastructure, said: "We take assurance from knowing that those taking care of our children and young people in other activities are under the care of people who have completed these checks.

"We should be able to have this same level of assurance and peace of mind for those learning to drive."
