A warning has been issued to livestock owners after an attack led to a horse being put to sleep.

Devon and Cornwall Police said the animal suffered "serious injuries" on Monday night following an assault in the Cheriton Bishop area.

The force said it was investigating the attack and its rural affairs team had warned livestock owners to be "extra vigilant".

It has urged people to check fields, hedges, gates and fences regularly and use locking posts to obstruct large openings to yards.

It also urged horse owners to use CCTV and ensure field gate hinges had capping hinges, making them harder to remove.

Police investigating the incident have asked witnesses to get in touch.
