Police investigating the placing of a flag with a "threatening message" on York's city walls have appealed to trace two men who came to a woman's aid.
North Yorkshire Police said the flag was placed on the walls near Walmgate on Tuesday.
A woman walked into the pole that was holding the flag and was followed and verbally abused by a man at about midday, until two men intervened, police said.
A 54-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident but has since been released on conditional bail while the investigation continues.
Officers made a fresh appeal for information and urged the two men and any other witnesses to come forward.
