A major Merseyside road network is set to undergo two weeks of roadworks and overnight closures as part of plans to overhaul the borough's transport system.

Sefton Council is carrying out the works as part of the A59 Corridor Improvement Scheme.

The £4.5m project will see a range of junction, cycleway, footway and highway improvement works on the A59 Northway in Maghull between the Dodds Lane junction and the West Lancashire borough boundary.

The council said the improvements will promote active travel and provide "nicer and safer" journeys for all users.

The scheme includes:

  • Highway and footpath work on Kenyons Lane

  • Cycle Optimised Protected Signals (CYCLOPS) at the Kenyons Lane junction

  • Separate cycle routes between Dodds Lane and Robbins Island roundabout

  • Continuation of cycle routes around the junction with Robins Island

  • A segregated footway and cycle lane between the Dodds Lane junction and the north side of Robbins Island roundabout

Overnight road closures are set to start on 29 September for two weeks to complete road resurfacing work.

The first week will see overnight closures Southbound from Robbins Island to Dodds Lane.

The second week, starting 6 October, will see closures from Dodds Lane to Robbins Island.

Roads will be closed from 19:00 BST to 03:00 BST and diversions will be in place.

A spokesperson for Sefton Council said the improvements will mean "nicer journeys" for residents.

"Whether it is for crossing the A59 to schools or nurseries, work or popping to the shops, these journeys will feel safe when walking, cycling or wheeling near a major road," a representative said.
