A police officer has been charged with causing the death of a young woman who was struck by a patrol car on Christmas Eve in Liverpool.

Rachael Moore, 22, was walking home from her job as a carer when she was knocked down on Sheil Road, in Kensington, on 24 December 2022.

The Merseyside Police vehicle was responding to an emergency call when it hit Miss Moore.

After an investigation by watchdog the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), PC Scott Thompson, 32, has been charged with causing death by careless driving.

'Cherished daughter'

PC Thompson is due to make an initial appearance at Manchester Magistrates' Court on Monday 24 November.

The IOPC said it carried out an independent investigation after Merseyside Police referred itself.

It handed a file of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service which authorised the charge.

An inquest into Miss Moore's death in 2023 heard PC Thompson tried to help her before paramedics arrived and took over but she died at the scene.

At the time of her death, Miss Moore's family described her as a "cherished daughter" and a "caring friend to many".
