A man has been charged with theft after two snakes were stolen from a pet shop in a Nottinghamshire town.

Police were called to Mansfield Aquatic Reptile and Pet Centre in Nursery Street on Thursday at about 14:40 BST.

The reptiles – a grey Florida King Snake and a brown Herald Snake – were taken from the store earlier in the day.

Neither animal has yet been returned to the shop, but police said they do not pose a threat to the public.

A 55-year-old man was arrested and has since been charged with theft from a shop.

Sgt Karam Kaur, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “While neither snake has been returned to the store yet, inquiries are ongoing to locate them and we’re confident this will happen soon.

“We’d also like to reassure the public that neither snake poses any threat to members of the public or domestic animals.”
