West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service attended nearly 300 Bonfire Night-related call-outs such as this one

Firefighters were attacked with fireworks thrown at them during a period of Bonfire Night-related "criminality".

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said its crews were called out 287 times between 1 and 5 November, with more incidents expected during firework celebrations this weekend.

There were six attacks on emergency services personnel reported and 10 arrests were made, according to West Yorkshire Police.

The fire service's district commander Andy Rose urged the public to "respect the job we do - we’re here to keep people safe".

The fire service said call-outs always peaked during the Bonfire Night period

“Over the last seven days, we’ve had reports of attacks on six firefighters, which is obviously a concern,” he added.

“It’s unacceptable and something we strongly condemn."

West Yorkshire Police confirmed it had made 10 arrests in relation to anti-social behaviour this week and that investigations remained “ongoing”.

Assistant Ch Con Sarah Baker said: “Unfortunately, there are a minority of people who use Bonfire Night and the surrounding days as a backdrop for anti-social behaviour and criminality.

"We have attended a number of incidents over this period in which fireworks have been directed at people, vehicles and property.

“Sadly, there have also again been incidences of emergency service personnel and vehicles being targeted with fireworks and other objects.

"These attacks are completely unacceptable.

"We will be following up on all available lines of inquiry to ensure robust action is taken against those responsible."

Mr Rose said that although the figure of 287 call-outs appeared high, it was "nothing we're not used to".

The fire service was anticipating responding to a number of "organised and unorganised" fireworks events over the weekend.

Ms Baker added: “We know there are still a number of events planned into the weekend and would encourage people to continue to follow safety advice to keep themselves and others safe and to report any anti-social or criminal behaviour they may witness.”
