A large fire at a landfill site has been extinguished days after it broke out.

Firefighters were called to the site in Compton Bassett, near Calne in Wiltshire, shortly after 18:00 BST on Sunday.

Plumes of smoke were visible for miles around, with nearby residents warned to keep windows and doors closed.

The fire burnt for more than two days and was extinguished on Wednesday morning, though firefighters said wisps of smoke may still be visible.

Flames consumed approximately 10,000 sq m (107,639 sq ft) of material, with crews from across the county called in to tackle the blaze.

In a statement published on Wednesday morning, Dorset and Wiltshire Fire Service said: "We have now left the scene in the control of the site management, and while there are some wisps of smoke still coming from the affected area, people should only now keep doors and windows closed if they are concerned."
