A stretch of the M4 has reopened hours after a lorry carrying bales of hay caught fire.

The westbound carriageway was shut between junction 18 for Tormarton and junction 19 for Bristol shortly before 16:00 BST on Wednesday.

Crews from Avon Fire and Rescue had left the scene by about 21:35 but returned in the early hours of Thursday to extinguish further hotspots in the hay.

National Highways said the road had re-opened by 02:34.

A 14-mile (22.5km) diversion was in place via the A420, A4174 and M32.
