Man charged with murder after woman stabbed to death

A man has been charged with the murder of a 51-year-old woman.

Michelle Hodgkinson died in Edge Lane, Droylsden, Greater Manchester, as she walked to visit her mother.

Paul Hughes, aged 29, has been charged with her murder and is set to appear in court later this week.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said the charges comes after a "lengthy investigation", with anyone with information about the attack urged to contact detectives.

The 51-year-old was stabbed at midday while walking to meet her mum

Det Insp Danny Lee said the force understood the stabbing "may have increased community concerns" about knife crime, but added attacks like this were "very rare".

"At the heart of this incident, a loved one has been torn away and our thoughts remain with Michelle’s family, whom we continue to support with specialist officers."
