The council wants to make Market Place one level

Four million pounds' worth of town centre improvements are due to start in Grantham within weeks.

South Kesteven District Council (SKDC) said £4.19m from the government’s Future High Streets Fund would "reinvigorate the town".

Some of the money is for upgrading public toilets.

The Market Place roads will be raised to make the surface level for events with work starting in April, the council said.

'Town centre oasis'

They said a second phase of the works later in the year will improve the approach to the town from the railway station to create a “pedestrian-led environment”.

The plans were drawn up with input from Grantham residents who were asked to list priorities for the town, SKDC said.

The project will raise the road height of the Market Place to create a single level open space, able to host regular town centre events.

Leader of SKDC Ashley Baxter said: “We are creating a formal heart of Grantham; a traffic-calmed public open space to provide a focus for events and a town centre oasis for visitors to enjoy.”

Market Place construction will start on 15 April.
