'Macho' school judgements criticised after head's death
A review prompted by the death of a head teacher has criticised a culture of "high-stakes accountability" that has led to the public condemnation of individuals.
Ruth Perry took her own life in January 2023 after an Ofsted inspection downgraded her school in Reading from "outstanding" to "inadequate".
A new independent review, external, commissioned by Reading Borough Council, recommended the authority support calls for Ofsted to scrap its one-word verdicts.
Eton set to give 'brick' phones to first years
Eton College is providing basic "brick" phones to pupils set to start at the school in September.
The devices, which can only send and receive texts and calls, will be given to Year 9 boys joining the Berkshire boarding school.
Eton said pupils would receive the handsets for use outside the school day, as well as an iPad to support academic study.
Noisy couple fined for disturbing neighbours
A couple who made so much noise that their neighbours complained to the council have been fined.
Kevin Kimani and Caroline Gitau, of Franklin Avenue, Slough, were both told to pay £2,531 in costs and fines in their absence at Reading Magistrates’ Court.
Slough Borough Council said it received complaints about noise, including overnight, coming from Kimani and Gitau’s home in January 2023.
Greatest Showman hero heads show at saved theatre
A theatre has launched its newest immersive production, a year after its last show helped save the venue from closure.
The Watermill Theatre's new show Barnum, which is based on the life of circus promoter PT Barnum, opened on Tuesday.
Barnum was played by Hugh Jackman in the hit film The Greatest Showman.
Cash machine facade removed from river bridge
A cash machine facade that appeared on a buttress of a Grade II listed bridge has been removed.
The grey ATM was placed on Sonning Bridge in Berkshire over the weekend by artist Impro.
Wokingham Borough Council said it was taken off by contractors in waders and was now being safely kept in storage.
