A man who was hit by a car and died has been described by his family as the "kindest person you would meet".

Pedestrian Craig Andrew Russell died at the scene of the crash on the A1058 Coast Road in Newcastle, between the Corner House and Cradlewell, during the early hours of last Tuesday.

His family said they will forever miss their "blue-eyed boy".

A man in his 60s was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and remains on bail, Northumbria Police said.

The crash, which involved a blue and red Volvo HGV, happened at about 01:00 BST, closing the road for several hours.

'Loved his dog'

Mr Russell's family said: "[Craig] had his ups and downs in life, but was always the kindest person you would meet, he would do anything for anyone and was always polite and extremely grateful.

"Around a year ago, Craig got a dog. He loved that dog so much and was never without Bear Bear, people would notice the dog before Craig and whenever Bear Bear got away, he was widely known as Craig’s dog and easily returned to him."
