Work starts on 'state-of-the-art' sports project

How the new changing rooms are expected to look

Work has started on improvements to a city park, including a new all-weather pitch.

Hull City Council said it would bring "state-of-the-art, year-round sports provision" to Costello Playing Fields, off Anlaby Park Road North.

A 3G pitch and changing facilities will be used by Hull College during term-time, while providing a "high-quality" space for community groups, according to the authority.

The work, which is also due to include new parking spaces and electric vehicle charging points, is expected to be completed by autumn 2026.

A public consultation on the work was held in 2023 and 2024.

Councillor Rob Pritchard, portfolio holder for culture and leisure, said: "This project benefits from considerable investment by the council and we've taken on board public opinion.

"To have another state-of-the-art sports facility for the people of Hull is fantastic."

The improvements are designed to complement existing facilities at Costello, including the recently reopened running track at the neighbouring athletics stadium.

The council said the site was prone to flooding at present and the improvements would benefit the "public, students, sports clubs, and park runners".

Access to car parks will be suspended at times during the work, but notice will be given.
