New art trail planned for town centre

The new art project will start in the summer

A series of new public artworks are to be created across Chesterfield.

Eighteen months of regeneration work starts in July to remodel Market Square, New Square and Rykneld Square.

Alongside this scheme, Chesterfield Borough Council plans to create a new trail of “small-scale artworks” people can follow through the town centre in Derbyshire.

The authority also plan to create an outdoor exhibition area, wall art and a Christmas window trail as well as a programme of activities over two years.

The new project will add to existing artworks around the town

The project will take over a vacant shop in Chesterfield to operate from.

A spokesperson for Chesterfield Borough Council, said: “Our borough includes a wide range of public art and this project seeks to build on that history and create new artworks to help visitors explore the area.

“We hope that it will create opportunities for people to visit the town centre and take part in activities throughout the regeneration works.”

An artist-in-residence will be hired by cultural development organisation Beam to lead the project.

Kate Watson, principal consultant at Beam, said: “It’s a privilege to have been appointed to work with communities and artists to animate public spaces through creativity, building on the area’s rich tradition of public art.”

The art programme will also include work in nearby Staveley town centre, which also has a regeneration scheme taking place.
