The gym at Driffield Leisure Centre will close for five days as part of a £220,000 improvement project, the council has confirmed.

New gym equipment will be installed at the centre on Bridlington Road, which will also be decorated. It will be closed from 16:00 GMT on Sunday and is expected to reopen on Saturday 8 November at 08:30.

Other areas of the centre will remain open during the work with additional classes available, East Riding of Yorkshire Council said.

Councillor Nick Coultish, cabinet member for culture, tourism and leisure, said the work would create a "bright, modern space".

He added: ''The refurbishment of East Riding Leisure Driffield's gym will see the introduction of brand new equipment, improving the facilities and overall experience for local gym goers."

The council said the work would see an extension to the free weights area and the introduction of high-tech spin bikes.

Members of the gym will be able to use other council-run facilities while the work takes place, the authority said.
