A police force plans to use a lorry cab to catch people breaking road rules in a week-long campaign.

From Monday, officers from Dorset Police will sit in the vehicle - which offers an "ideal viewing platform" because of its height - while it is driven around Bournemouth, said the force.

It could help identify dangerous behaviour that is difficult to spot from standard police cars, like texting while driving, it said.

Between 2021 and 2022, Dorset Police issued fines to more than 500 motorists for using a mobile phone behind the wheel.

The campaign, named Operation Tramline, aims to crack down on the "fatal five" most common causes of collisions, according to the Dorset Roads Policing team.

They include distraction, not wearing a seatbelt, driving at excessive or inappropriate speed, driving under the influence of drink or drugs and driving without due care and attention.

The scheme is funded by National Highways.
