A Guernsey LGBTQ+ charity has criticised an "idiot" who vandalised a rainbow-painted postbox.

It comes after the LGBTQ+ themed postbox in Market Square, St Peter Port, was sprayed with red and blue paint.

Ellie Jones, CEO of Liberate Guernsey, said it was "a really disappointing thing to wake up to".

She said: "I don't know if it is motivated by hatred or annoyance at the rainbow, or if it is just mindless vandalism."

Ms Jones added: "I'm just disappointed really, it's just a bit sad that things like this happen."

She also said that, despite the vandalism, those who were upset by the damage should remember "there is a whole community of people who really love and support you".

She said: "All we need to do is bear in mind we had 6,000 people celebrating diversity [for Channel Islands Pride].

"So one idiot who wants to paint over something isn't going to take that away."

The BBC has approached Guernsey Police for comment.
