The driver of a car involved in a "serious" crash which closed part of the M25 for seven hours remains in a critical condition.

The vehicle came off the M25 and ended up on a road running under the motorway on Thursday.

Surrey Police said an investigation to establish the cause was still ongoing.

A spokesperson said the driver, a man in his 50s, remains in hospital in a critical condition.

Police appealed for witnesses after a Vauxhall Astra left the motorway and plunged down an embankment before coming to a stop on Water Lane below the M25.

A 9.4 mile (15km) stretch of the motorway between Surrey and Kent was fully closed following the incident.

No other injured parties were reported.

South East Coast Ambulance Service confirmed one person was treated at the scene before being taken to a London hospital.
