Two people were rescued after becoming trapped in the mud on a beach in Lincolnshire.

Cleethorpes Coastguard were called to the scene near Humberston Fitties at about 11:20 GMT on Sunday.

A man and a woman were trapped "about 20 metres from the safety of solid ground", the coastguard said.

The pair were freed by two specialist mud rescue technicians using spades, water and compressed air and did not require medical treatment.

"They were not from the area and were not aware of the dangers along that part of the coast regarding the mud," the coastguard said.

"This could happen to anyone visiting the area. There are signs along the coastline warning people about the dangers of mud in the area, but they may not always be obvious, depending on where you walk onto the beach."

Later on Sunday, the coastguard team were called to a suspected explosive device on Cleethorpes seafront.

The promenade was sealed off and a bomb disposal unit called in.

However, the "bottle-shaped metal bar sticking out from the ground" was identified as just a piece of metal, Humberside Police said.

The coastguard said it was believed to be an old stanchion from a set of steps which had been uncovered when recent high tides and strong winds washed away the sand.
