A motorist who was stopped by police after he drove on the hard shoulder told an officer he was "running late for work".

Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Road Policing Unit, external said the man was pulled over on the M1 northbound, between junctions nine, for St Albans, and junction 10 for Luton, at about 08:30 GMT.

On X, the unit said: "Yes, there may be traffic. Yes, you may be running late for work. It doesn't make it acceptable to drive on the hard shoulder."

It added the lane should "only to be used in an emergency" and the driver was given a "ticket for his troubles", which made him even later.
