A farm that noticed its cows had a taste for jazz played over its loudspeakers invited a local band down to play for the herd.

Smithills Open Farm near Bolton's dairy cows were treated to a performance by jazz outfit Dixie Beats.

"They've been a captive audience, because they couldn't get away from us, but they seemed to like it," said band leader John Percival.

"They like a lively number, but not played too loud, so they're obviously a very selective audience.

"And one or two of them even had a taste of my trumpet, so that'll need a good clean when I get home."
