Man spotted with suspected firearm on church grounds

Police were contacted after a man was spotted near Bangor Abbey on the Newtownards Road on Thursday night

A 36-year-old man has been arrested following an incident involving a suspected firearm in the grounds of a church in Bangor, County Down.

Church members contacted police after they reportedly approached the man and saw what they suspected to be a firearm in his pocket at Bangor Abbey, on the Newtownards Road, at about 21:20 BST on Thursday.

Damage was caused to church property by an angle grinder.

Officers, as well as armed response officers, were dispatched to the scene and located the suspect at a nearby address.

The 36 year old was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm in suspicious circumstances and criminal damage.

He remains in custody at this time.

Police have asked for those with information to contact them.
