Plans for the Seaburn tram shelter include two new beach huts

  • Published

Plans have been submitted for a new outdoor takeaway kiosk at a beachside former tram shelter turned cafe.

The venue opened last December following major restoration of the landmark Grade II listed structure on Whitburn Road in Seaburn.

Hospitality business Blacks Corner is now seeking permission for two new beach huts to “provide for additional food and drink storage”.

This would also enable the takeaway kiosk currently inside the building to be relocated.

There would also be “additional areas of paving and the provision of a cycle rack”.

The Local Democracy Reporting Service said the heritage, design and access statement submitted with the plans revealed the two additional beach hut units would "exactly match" the existing storage which was previously granted permission.

It added: “The style was specifically chosen and previously justified to make a positive, yet unobtrusive, contribution to the setting.

“The huts are also in an exposed position so adding two more huts will give the structure more stability."

Sunderland City Council is due to consider the plans in August.
