A three-week-old blind kitten called Donut who was being cared for at a Cornwall animal rescue centre after being found wandering alone in a poor condition has died.

Staff at the National Animal Welfare Trust (NAWT) centre in Hayle said Donut was discovered by a local woman who heard a noise while gardening.

After attempts to find the kitten's mother failed, she was taken to a local vet for emergency treatment and passed on to the NAWT.

Rescue centre staff said a bad infection was discovered in her stomach and her "body wasn't able to cope with it", passing on Saturday morning.

A spokesperson for NAWT Cornwall said they noticed there was something wrong with Donut's eyes soon after she was brought in.

It said: "On arrival it was noted that Donut's eyes were looking gunky and needed regular cleaning.

"After further monitoring and a visit from the vet, it was discovered that Donut is in fact blind."

The charity said its team were "all absolutely devastated" at Donut's passing as she was "so special".
