Officials have proposed 18 June 2025 as the date for Guernsey's general election.

The date was included among a series of proposals, external put forward by the States Assembly and Constitution Committee (SACC) and will likely be debated at May's States meeting.

SACC also proposed abolishing the £500 grant for candidates.

If the proposals are approved, nominations for the general election will open on Monday 12 May 2025 and close on Wednesday 14 May 2025.

SACC, which is the committee in charge of organising elections, also put forward plans for limits on how much candidates can spend.

If approved, individual candidates would be able to spend £7,500 and parties £15,000.

It said candidates supported or endorsed by political parties would also have the option of transferring up to half of their allowance to fund their political party.

Another SACC proposal states there would have to be three vacancies in the States before a by-election is held.

Analysis: By John Fernandez, BBC Guernsey political reporter

With almost a year until Guernsey's next general election, expect the States to go into a flurry of activity before May 2025.

We've already seen two requêtes this year and there are more on the horizon as deputies look to add achievements to their CV before polling day next year.

So far we have not yet heard of the emergence of any political parties after the mixed successes of the Guernsey Partnership of Independents, The Guernsey Party and The Alliance Party in the 2020 general election.

But don't rule them out, with some conversations happening behind the scenes about groupings which could emerge in early 2025.
