The M60 is likely to be shut for several hours after a fatal incident, police have said.

The ringroad - heavy with traffic heading to the Oasis gig at Heaton Park - was closed in the early afternoon, with major tailbacks between Junction 19 and Junction 22.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said staff would be deployed on the motorway and local roads "to help minimise disruption for concertgoers and the public" after the Oasis concert was due to finish at about 22:30 GMT.

The force has not revealed the nature of the fatal incident.

A GMP spokesman said: "We strongly advise people to avoid travelling in the area if they can.

"Those planning to travel must prepare for severe delays and plan their journey ahead."

The road was expected to be closed until at least midnight.
