Nurse honoured for 70 years of patient care

A woman who has dedicated 70 years of "steadfast" service to her community as a nurse and volunteer has been honoured by her local council.
Elaine Brettell, 85, worked for 45 years as a nurse at Salford Royal Hospital, and also volunteered for the last 25 years of her life with the Women's Royal Voluntary Service.
She was presented with the Mayor's Citizen Award in "recognition of her unwavering dedication and exceptional service".
The citation added she was "a remarkable individual whose selflessness has left an indelible mark on the community".
It also noted her "dedication remains steadfast, inspiring all who know her."
'Tireless efforts'
The Ceremonial Mayor of Salford, Councillor Gina Reynolds said: “As soon as I heard about Elaine’s commitment to local people I agreed that she was more than worthy for the award.
"It was a pleasure to invite her to the Mayor’s Parlour so I could thank her on behalf of the city and present her with the award."
She added: "Her tireless efforts and compassionate spirit has made a huge difference to people’s lives. She is a true inspiration and I’m so proud we have her living here."
Lucy Boulter, head of volunteering at Northern Care Alliance NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Salford Royal Hospital, also paid tribute to her contribution to the NHS.
"I have witnessed first-hand the impact she has made and continues to make on the local community and the people we serve," she said.
Ms Bouler added: "I am full of admiration for her dedication, kindness and commitment to helping others and feel immensely proud to be a part of her story and have the pleasure of working alongside her.”
