Two men have been arrested on suspicion of murder after a man died at a house in Wirral.

Emergency services were called out earlier to a house in Fender Way, Birkenhead, over concerns for the safety of a man in his 20s, Merseyside Police said.

Police said they went to the house just before 16:00 BST and that despite paramedics' efforts to save the man, he was declared dead at the scene.

The force said two Birkenhead men, aged 43 and 27, who were held on suspicion of murder were in police custody.

Post mortem

A number of police vehicles and at least one ambulance went to the scene and a cordon was in place for several hours.

Forensics teams could also be seen in the area before the cordon was lifted at about 21:00, eyewitnesses told the BBC.

A post mortem examination is to take place to establish the cause of death, and the body is yet to be formally identified, the police said.

Detective inspector Phil Ryan said: "It is with great sadness that we confirm that a man was found dead at a property on Fender Way.

"We are in the very early stages of the investigation as we seek to establish what has taken place and how he died."

He urged anyone with information to contact police.
