Major search under way for missing teenage canoeist

A teenage canoeist has gone missing sparking a major search.

The boy was seen setting off in a canoe by Sluice Road, St Germans, King's Lynn at 15:49 BST on Sunday.

Emergency services involved in the search include Norfolk Police, Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service, Norfolk Lowland Search and Rescue and the coastguard.

The stretch of water by Sluice Road, known as the Middle Level Main Drain, external, was formed in the 17th Century to drain parts of the Fens.

The East of England Ambulance Service said it sent nine emergency vehicles to Sluice Road on Sunday to "reports of a canoeist in difficulty".

"Ambulance resources stayed on scene until 9pm when the search for the young man was stood down," a spokesperson added.

"We have also had an ambulance and ambulance officer vehicle on scene today when the search resumed."

The East Anglian Air Ambulance was also sent to the scene.
