Guernsey's lieutenant governor has spoken of his personal connection to the RNLI at an event in Alderney, held to celebrate the charity's 200th anniversary.

The charity celebrated its anniversary at the end of last week by taking photos at lifeboat stations across the country at precisely 18:24 BST, marking the year it was founded.

Crews in Guernsey, Jersey and Alderney all took part.

Lieutenant Governor Lt Gen Richard Cripwell travelled to Alderney for a special event at which the RNLI was recognised.

He told people at the commemoration about the importance of the RNLI to the island and its community, including how it was involved in an operation to help rescue his grandfather, who unfortunately died at sea.

He said: "Lifeboats aren't something you see on television, they are part of our lives.

"It's always been there it feels like and, hopefully, it always will be."
